Mini cooper S S40 Strange problem

Post by andypipe »

I have been tearing my hair out over this one for the last couple of weeks. the car runs fine until it gets to about 5800 rpm then starts missing. the crank trace is perfect, and when it gets to the above revs it starts mis firing and stearts throwing out rejected crank pulses. when missing, i am running a crank sensor trace and it is still perfect.
I was told it could be interference so removed every thing from the car that was not required to make it run and it still happens. i have replaced the loom, coil pack, plug leads, but it is still doing the same thing.

anyone got any ideas

So the mini uses a wasted spark coilpack and not individual coils? Misfires like that can sometimes be attributed to the "Coil per plug" settings and the cam sensor position being misaligned in the software.

Uses coul pack, and no cam sensor as we are using batched injection, not sequential

What kind of crank sensor? I had issues with a failing hall sensor. Would run 100% fine. Then it'd run like crap and cut out. Switched to a VR sensor and no issues.

We have switched to a VR crank sensor already as the S40 wont run hall effect

Crank sensor to trigger wheel gap is correct and the sensor square onto the teeth? And the trigger wheel itself is perfectly round and not oval?

I know you said your trace was good, but are you running shielded twisted pair wire for the VR sensor, which is grounded correctly at the ECU?

Running out of ideas now, lol

Can we see a screenshot of the crank oscilloscope?
