Audi Quattro Turbo 5 cylinder on S80 wont start!

Hi All,

I've installed an S80 on an Audi 2.2litre 5 cylinder turbo engine, it has no cam sensor and has amplified COPs (external amps ticked), We're using a VAG hall effect 60-2 rear crank mounted sensor and we've determined that the sensor position is around 75 degrees BTDC (by using an LED on the sensor output and finding the missing tooth gap). Crank Oscilloscope looks good and agrees its 60-2. I have it set up as per instructions from Alex as a 10 cylinder, COP's not selected so it should run wasted spark. Its got 1000cc Bosch injectors @ 3bar. It just refuses to start and run. We have good sparks on all 5 coils during cranking and the diagnostics says it "Synchronised trying to start". Firing order is 12453 and I have double checked that the coils are wired accordingly.

Tried massively reduced fuel in the fuel map. Not done a compression test as yet, we have to assume at present that the cam timing is correct by engine builder. Will be looking at it again tomorrow and doing compression test. Its sort of trying to start, but just wont run.

Anyone got any clues as we've run out of ideas!

Cheers,

Martin

With a timing light, does spark timing seem sensible on cyl1, or each cylinder ?

Does engine sound like it has compression etc ?

Do a fast datalog of battery voltage during cranking and it should give an indication of relative compression

Plugs wet ? dry ? other ? Confirmed fuel is actually spraying ?

We did a compression test, only 130psi each cylinder. Inspected cam timing (owner had had belt of but was adamant that he was methodical and that he'd marked it all up and it was correct). Looked at cams at TDC, didnt look right, massive lift on exhaust cam, rotated engine until the lobes were positioned symetrically towards each other and found that it was 30 degrees after TDC so 2 teeth out on the crank pulley. Corrected timing and did another compression test, now 150 psi on all cyls. Still wont start.

Plugs definitely getting fuel

Like Stevie says is it sparking anything like in the right place when tested with a timing light, just disregard your other test for a moment just to be sure.

Yes, we strobed no1 cylinder and it looks good, spot on, havnt tried strobing the others yet.

will be a bit hard testing the others as you will have to figure out where in the 360 it should be firing, not imposable of course, but even if only one cylinder is firing in the right place it should sort of shudder into life. Try some easy start stuff to rule out fuel issues?

Oscilloscope is handy for this, with current clamp monitoring the coils and some sort of cyl1 reference ( which you could pull off the ecu coil trigger or injector if sequential )

i have a audi 2.2 on a s80 and i use te cam senor it is beter for the 5 cil
and it runs beter and is beter for the engine cil 3 is the week of te 5 cil make het seq
you kan use the hall sensor from the ignition unit it is 5 volt

OK, thanks, I've heard that a cam sensor can be fitted behind the cam pulley, also in a distributor casing. (its blanked off on this engine) I think it would be possible to fit one into the cam cover looking at the scroll gear of the inlet cam. The scroll gear would need to be ground off except for one tooth.

if you have a aan engine whit the hall sensor on the back of the cam wheel take it
wen you dont have take a ditributor from a 3 b engine and set the ditributor on the org way in the head
works fine
