Surely if that is such a problem, all relays would have a diode built in ?

Ive used boost control solenoids on many ecu's though, none have ever stipulated the need for a diode. Unless ecu outputs have some sort of protection already.

I have only played a little with electronics... but something like a mosfet for example, due to the design you often don't need the flyback diode as it does it internally. So probably why it may not be required with DTA. Being an automotive product, I would expect they already cover things like that fairly well...?

I found an email at work here from Allan when I asked about diode protection for idle valve circuits.
Hi Allan,

Hope all is well over there. Ever since I switched my car from that hall sensor on the crank to the factory BMW VR sensor it’s been 100%! Car runs great!

I am going to be adding an idle valve (more out of boredom than anything else) and wanted to know if I need any protective diodes across the wires. I know some ECUs require that. Any concern? Its similar to the idle valve you guys get on a 1998 – 2004 Ford Focus 1.8-2.0L. If you happen to know of any PWM/PID settings for this valve that’d be great too though I know that’s usually application-specific.

Thanks!

All is fine here thanks, racing season starts on Saturday.

You do not need diodes, protection is built in. I attach a map from our Ginetta which has the same valve.

A new update is due in a few days.

Regards

There you go! They already knew to cover it ;)

Then i overworked my cable loom when i soldered in some diodes on the idle valve and variable intake solenoid valve?
Both valves seem to work ok for me, but can there be any problems having an extra diode in the loom?

No issue can come of having an extra diode.

For the moment the loom is out of the car, so i could take the diodes off but if they cause no problem i will leave them in there.
Should be for the wheight loss, couple of milligrams...
