E48 ecu not picking up crank sensor reading.

Post by Steveevs43 »

Got an E48 ecu ,if I run a test on spark and injectors ,all works..but it won't recognise crank sensor, tested sensor all working ,I'm using oem crank sensor ,it's all on a vauxhall x20xev motor running original parts ie injection, coilpack, and all the sensors, am baffled now,any help epuld be much appreciated.

has it ever ran ?

Has the ecu been set up correctly for your application ?

Engine was a runner on original wiring and ecu ,bit I've removed all of vehicle loom, and engine loom,to replace with dta and a smaller loom on the car ,ecu was set up for a vauxhall 16v motor .

When you're cranking, what does diagnostic display show ?

do a screen record, or video of it or something

And not all motors are the same, has the crank trigger setup etc been correctly configured/wired for your engine ?

Seems like it's an crank sensor fault, I've had a new one ,so will try it ,diagnostic display isn't showing any cranking action at all,I've a feeling also along with sensor issue, the wiring diagram is wrong for my sensor ,as mine needs a positive feed to work it ,there's no feed on diagram, only a shield and return to ecu .

Sounds like the 'new' crank sensor is a Hall device which does need a voltage supply to work. I'd take an additional supply from the DTA fused supply to the crank sensor. These give a very distinctive output signal - a square wave - different to the inductive sensors that are widely used.

dta e48, only accepts 2 or 3 wire VR sensors, nothing hall or optical.

You have to change the sensor.

If it is powered, it should not work for this old ecu

Hi mine is a 3 wire sensor ,original equipment for the vauxhall x20xev motor in an astra gsi 1998,out of interest what type of sensor would be in these ?

Scope it and see.

Some may have 3 terminals, one is just carrying on the shield. Although more often 3 wires will be hall.

Only way to be sure is to test it

Crank sensor connections
Use twisted pair wire with overall
screen for crank sensor
VR sensor pin outs (magnetic)
Pin 1 to pin 18
Pin 2 to pin 20
Shield to pin 20 at ECU
Vauxhall/Opel/BMW/Volvo/Saab/e
tc. (Bosch & Siemens)
Pin 1 to pin 18
Pin 2 to pin 20
Pin 3 to shield to pin 20 at ECU
