Fuel supply (not starting)

Post by Totalnova »

I'm having some trouble getting my car started for the first time.
Z18xe using S40 pro
Now the pump primes when the ignition switches on but I'm not getting any fuel when I'm cranking. Is this normal?

I'm a bit stumped why it's not starting, the crank sensor is set up correctly 36/1, and the oliscope looks ok. Any help is welcome
Thanks Nick.

Try an injector test, with the fuel pump off, make sure they are clicking.
In the diagnostics screen is the engine synchronizing ok?
Are you getting a spark?

You won't get any fuel until the ECU synchronises.

I've had the injectors and coils clicking away when tested. I'll be doing some diagnostic work this morning and post back.

What does this mean ?

No fuel at all sprayed via injector ? Visually confirmed ?

No fuel pressure ?

No signal to the injectors ?

No power to the pump ?

Confirm all the above. As well as confirming crank sync, rpm reading and spark.

When I turn the ignition on the fuel pump primes for 1 or 2 seconds on my fuel pressure regulator (which is a cheap one) I'm only getting 2 bar of pressure, that pressure then slowly disappears down the return line and then drops to zero.

I'm getting engine synchronization on the diagnostic screen when cranking.

Next problem is the car is backfiring when cranking, very loud sounds like a gun going off.

I feel like closing the garage door and just leaving it, so frustrating

If its backfiring it's getting fuel. If the FPR is only making 2 bar on test, fix that, should be able to maintain 3 bar, use the test function to hold the fuel pump on .

Therefore sounds like you have the ignition wrong somehow.

The crank sensor position in general engine settings is critical. But by using a timing light you can get close with the plugs out whilst cranking.

In oldschool language - you'd normally say the Dizzy was 180 degrees out or plug leads are incorrect order. If you are using a coil pack and running wasted spark you can try swapping 1 and 4 and swapping 2 and 3..............or swap the coil LT trigger wires in the plug.

That was going to be my next move, I've currently got the battery on charge and taken the plugs out and given them a clean up, then I will swap the hT leads over as you've suggested and see how that goes and I'll report back.

If the plugs have been getting no fuel, there's little reason for them to need cleaned or replaced.

But you've said fuel pressure rises on prime, but then falls off. Obviously the engine will never start with no fuel pressure.

So fix that problem first.
