Beetle Turbo

I'm a designer from North Lincolnshire, about 5 miles south of Hull. I've yet to run across many DTA users locally, though I'm sure they exist. Here's an introduction to my turboed bug. Not particularly fast, though its nippy, and just a little bit Heath Robinson... but I'm doing my best AND most importantly, enjoying doing so.

That steering wheel doesn't particularly add to the steering experience... and yet... it feels so nice



Its pushed along by this:

It's a mild 1914cc motor, counterbalanced crank ( they're not as standard don't you know) lightened flywheel, a mild bugpack cam, something along the lines of an engle 110 and topped with a pair of CNC roundport heads, which I've then strangled with the induction.

I run a rebuilt garret T3 turbo on a CB performance hideaway manifold and then blow through a chargecooler into a modefied mexican beetle throttlebody, runners and injection ends. The mexican setup is restrictive, there's quite a few options for me to upgrade, now that I've got the rest of injection set up. I run a VW Speedshop crank driven ignition kit, which forms the basis of my injection - though it did evolve fron a Renault 5 GT turbo carb setup initially.

It's been down York raceway a few times, and that's something I'd like to do more of, though it's really a weekend / fine weather toy. Last outing was 14.79 @ 91mph but I'm hoping recent mods / tyres will see me to low 14's or possibly hight 13s ( hopefully) though budget dictates that I'm still on a standard gearbox, albeit a 1600gt box.

Top speed is an awe inspiring 120mph at 6000rpm, or so my excel gear ratios says... strangely seem to be able to get my kicks under 90! But it does give me a 0 - 60 or around 6.3 seconds based on my 1/8 mile times and that's good enough to make a lot of hot hatches take notice, though in terms of other VW drag racers, I'm more than slow.



I'm slowly trying to improve things and do more with the ECU... but I'm in no rush and I'm learning as I go, but slowly getting there with the help of you lot.

Very cool!

It looks like you are doing a good job of managing the heat back there. I like how the flat four divides the hot underside from the cooler inlet stuff up top. Does it cope with the turbo alright, temperature wise?

So there is no real intake plenum to these things, just some quite long branches to the manifold and a small volume dividing area from the throttle?

I'll keep my eyes peeled for you next time I make it to one of the VW and Yank tank days they have at York Raceway, see if you're about for a natter. Keep up the good work!

ta guys.

Those modefied mexican inlets are restrictive Mark and I suspect there HUGE gains as soon as I can swap for something better, probably a single upside down T with 1 3/4", maybe 1 1/2" pipe.....

gearbox first ;) oh and a look at the brakes wouldn't do any harm

Sometimes you'd be very surprised on intakes, especially with boost.

Of course flow etc does matter. But that isnt to say something that looks very bad, and would be very bad n/a still wont perform remarkably well when boosted !

So, a few updates...

I've gone red! mainly because I was becoming more and more concerned with the swingarm beetles handling, or at least my version of it. So I bit the bulled and took a step towards the VW darkside, and moved my allegiances to the 1302 camp, with its McPherson strut front and 944 rear.

But it is the same project, as I swapped the engine directly with the previous blue bug.

Though I've added a decent set of VW Speedshop injection manifolds and given the chargecooler a decent radiator for a change.

My wiring is only slightly better though...

sweet, I sill have my first beetle :D a 1969 baja bug,

I built a 67 turbo'd beetle, totally stock 1600 twinport, but using the renault 5 turbo and carb set up. really simple install with no intercooler. managed a 15 second 1/4

I had a 65 Karmann ghia with a 2.0L 8v Golf engine that did 1/4 mile in 14 seconds :D totally standard engine too. I sold that tho to fund the Porsche :D
