1 series BMW tarmac rally car, 3 litre S50B30, DTA S80

Post by mefmotorsport »

Hi everyone,

My latest project is a 1 series E87 BMW powered by an E36 M3 3litre engine which will be running on an S80 and with an X dash. It's currently still in progress of being built, I'm currently wiring the whole car so it's "non Canbus" !

Yes, this is a new build rally car, built from an accident damaged 118D that I bought on ebay last August! It's taking too long! I was hoping to have had it on the road by now but a few diversions this year have set it back by several months!

Very nice! Jealous really. Those are some wicked tires on the front. What does that lifeline box do?

All running gear is from an E92 M3, E36 M3 5 speed gearbox. S50B32 cylinder head, using S50B30 single Vanos controlled by S80. M3 2.4 turns steering rack driven by Vauxhall Corsa Epas (electric assisted) column, home made bias pedal box in modified bulkhead section. Hydraulic handbrake, Custom cages weld in multipoint cage. Diff is also M3 3.85:1 Mslip diff.

Lifeline box is the fir extinguisher control unit, plumbed in extinguisher is mandatory for a rally car. (FIA rules etc)

Thats awesome. How much power is saved with electric power steering pumps? Worthwhile?

Mini Cooper made the mistake of using electric power steering but they fused it with the cooling fan - so when the pump would die and burn the fuse the cooling fan wouldn't work lol!

Looks awesome. I have a fire extinguisher too but its a mechanical pull cable.

DTA S100 would control the dual vanos in the B32 head, right? Any reason for not switching?

This should be an awesome rally car. What spec tires, and suspension do you plan on running?

I only used the electric steering for simplicity, saves all that plumbing for the hydraulic system, also it's become a standard fitment on most Gp4 Mk2 Escorts so I thought if it's good enough for them then it will do for me! Sensitivity is controllable by a potentiometer or switch etc... It only draws current when your turning the wheel so I suppose there will actually be a small saving on power unlike the electric/hydraulic pumps that take continuous current. It probably weighs more than the hydraulic engine driven pump plus pipes and reservoir tank though!

I was told by a few people that there's little advantage in the dual vanos, (on exhaust cam), some seem to think it's a bit of a sales gimmick by BMW, also seems that its less reliable than single vanos?

tyres will be ex WRC moulded slicks as seen above, 650 x 225 x 18" or inters etc..

I have bought AVO 3 way adjustable struts for the front, remote reservoir, same for the rear but 2 way (now on coil-overs)
